Michael Thomas Jackson
is a composer and multi-instrumentalist. He has
been involved in notated composition, free improvisation, electronic studio
work, avant rock and various group efforts for nearly twenty years. In
1985 he began recording as Cephalic Index and released some thirty cassettes
over the following six years. It was during this time that Michael also
operated the experimental cassette label Xkurzhen Sound out of Memphis,
and later, Boston and North Carolina, with over fifty releases. Although
predominantly an autodidact, Michael pursued composition studies in the
mid 1990s at The North Carolina School of the Arts on a Vittorio Giannini
scholarship. Here he enjoyed many successful premieres of chamber and
solo works, as well as readings by members of new-music champions Speculum
Musicae. As an instrumentalist, Michael is a practitioner of extended
techniques on the clarinet, employing multiphonics and microtones as fundamental
elements of music-making. The same spirit of experimentation has also
been applied to the guitar and to analogue electronics. Over the years
Michael has played in or collaborated with many groups and individuals
including Viktimized Karcass, Rompecabeza, Sunny Cuba, Nomuzic, Hal McGee,
Zan Hoffman, Choptsicks, the Truncheonette guitar ensemble series, Spool
Ensemble, Quien Es, Thomas Dimuzio, Eugene Chadbourne, Bruce Eisenbeil,
and Brian Osborne. From 2001-2003, he served on the board of directors
for the non-profit arts collective Project Space 211 who commissioned
his first two sound installations at the Sawtooth Center For Visual Art
and The Wherehouse in Winston-Salem. In February, 2004, he was a featured
artist in the 7th annual Activating The Medium Festival at SOMARTS in
San Francisco. In the summer of the same year an installation project
in collaboration with Mary Utley was executed through the Elsewhere Art
Collaborative in Greensboro. Currently active in performing and recording,
Michael resides with his family in North Carolina. Here he continues his
solo work and collaborates with the pluderphonics collective Skoweyajeed,
the improvising ensemble O.N.E., and releases new music through his Primecuts
Recordings imprint.
